The Department of Agriculture and Water
of the Autonomous Murcia Community
gave out the prizes corresponding to the
7
th
Edition of the Sustainable Development
Awards. In this edition, the Cartagena City
Council won one of the prizes for the En-
vironmental Classrooms organized by its
Department of Education, and another one
was awarded to Lhicarsa, the company
that has the concession for the city’s clea-
ning service.
Josefa Maroto, counsellor for Education,
and the counsellor for the Environment,
Joaquín Segado, the latter collecting the
prize on behalf of Lhicarsa, were present at
the award ceremony that was held at the
Events Hall of the Department.
The Sustainable Development award are
honorific and do not imply any monetary
prize. Its objective is to publicly recognise
the efforts of companies, institutions, orga-
nizations, and associations in the region in
sustainable development so that they can
spread these successful experiences and
ideas as a reference for others.
The prize includes several categories: the
Sustainable Development awards, such
as the one given to Limpieza e Higiene de
Cartagena S.A. (Lhicarsa) for implementing
eco-management measures such as the
treatment of leachate or the production of
electricity from gas in the landfill sites; the
Corporate Social Responsibility awards in
environment-related issues; and, lastly, the
Environmental Education awards which
was given this year to the Cartagena City
Council.
For Cartagena’s City
Council and the city’s
cleaning service
This recognition is part of the Reduce,
Reuse, and Recycle: the three Rs program
which has been carried out since 2008 by
the Department of Education in collabora-
tion with the Department of Infrastructures
and Lhicarsa to educate students on the
selective waste collection system imple-
mented in Cartagena, its ecological advan-
tages and the basic rules for its appropriate
use.
Aimed at students in the 3rd cycle of pri-
mary education, the workshops are orga-
nized at the La Vaguada Ecopark where a
classroom has been fitted for this purpose.
