Mafalda
welcomes Quino in Oviedo
The Argentinean cartoonist collected the Príncipe de Asturias Communication
and Humanities 2014 Prize.
The sculpture of Mafalda,
which was sponsored
by FCC Aqualia, a twin of
the one in Buenos Aires,
was placed in the
main park of the capital
of Asturias.
The Príncipe de Asturias Communication
and Humanities 2014 Prize was awarded
this year to Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón,
the Argentinean cartoonist who is better
known worldwide as Quino. He achieved
international fame with the creation of the
universe of Mafalda, a girl who perceives
the complexity of the world through the
eyes of a child.
The mayor of Oviedo, in the presence of
Quino, unveiled a statue of Mafalda in the
city’s landmark San Francisco Park. The
work is a replica of another sculpture in
Buenos Aires (Argentina) and was made by
the same artist, Pablo Irrgang, who concei-
ved the sculpture as “homage to Quino and
his character”. The sculpture and the di-
rector of the Príncipe de Asturias Awards
Foundation plus FCC Aqualia representati-
ves were present at the unveiling ceremony.
The mayor, during the event thanked FCC
Aqualia for its help with the logistics invol-
ved for transferring the statue from Buenos
Aires to Oviedo which, they said, “was not
an easy task”.
Mafalda is intelligent, ironic, a non-confor-
mist, rebellious, and sensitive. She dreams
of a world with more dignity, just and res-
pectful of human rights, values that FCC
Aqualia fully subscribes.
