Raúl Parreño is a supervisor and has
been working at FCC for over 20
years. David Ortega, who joined FCC
in September 2005, is a project ma-
nager. Both are currently working at
the services contract for operations
and maintenance of the peripheral
sanitation networks managed by Ca-
nal de Isabel II.
FCC heroes
went to the site and ordered the operators
not to go to the bottom of the well under
any circumstances and to notify the Civil
Guards.
When they arrived, the Civil Guards were al-
ready there and, fearing that the dog could
attack, they decided to call for help.
Raul and David waited for help, but since it
was taking too long, they decided to get to
work and help rescue the dog. After talking
to the animal for a long time to try to calm
him down, they agreed to try to rescue it.
They prepared a bow and sling which they
dropped to the bottom of the well so that
the dog could place his front legs through
and they could lift him up. The dog, howe-
ver, was very weak. They then decided
that somebody had to go half-way down
the well to try to help the dog hang on to
the sling. They weren’t sure who was more
afraid, the dog, or them. The greyhound did
not offer any resistance and allowed them
to help him, and they brought him up to the
surface. After a short while, the Civil Guard
arrived with Narub, the animal aid associa-
tion that took charge of the dog.
After some time, Raúl and David decided to
visit the dog kennel to see how the dog was
doing and see if it had survived since du-
ring the time that the dog had been at the
bottom of the well, it ate rotten meat and
drank faecal water. To the surprise of ever-
yone, the dog, a female, was almost reco-
vered and had a new name, Mila (short for
Milagro, which means miracle in Spanish).
She recognised them and jumped and star-
ted to lick them as a sign of gratitude.
The kennel which took care of Mila infor-
med them that through an association and
after undergoing several checkups, a family
had fallen in love with her and had adopted
the dog. “Our greyhound, Milagros, was
adopted by a family with children. They
could not tell us if they were from Belgium
or Austria, but they did confirm that she
was quite healthy when she was adopted”.
