The San Marcos Viaduct, built by
FCC, receives the
Lieberman Prize
for Best Works Project
The works project of the San Marcos Via-
duct, Engineer Gilberto Borja Navarrete
Bridge, in Mexico, spearheaded by FCC,
has been awarded the Lieberman Prize
for Best Works Project by the Mexican
Chamber of Construction Industry (CMIC)
through the Foundation of Construction In-
dustry for Technological Development and
Productivity (FIC).
Officially named after the Engineer Gilber-
to Borja Navarrete, this project crosses the
San Marcos River and is the second tallest
viaduct in the world, reaching 225 metres
in height and 850 metres in length divided
into 7 different bridge spans of up to 180
metres. When laying the foundations of the
highest column, six thousand cubic metres
of concrete were poured at once, out of the
64,000 used for the entire viaduct. More
than 10,000 tonnes of steel were used and
excavation works of 350,000 m
3
were ca-
rried out to facilitate the laying of the foun-
dations.
The Lieberman Prize for Best Works Project
is an annual award which acknowledges
and praises the professional skills, effort
and creativity of a construction company,
with regards to the following: overcoming
problems, organisation, staff skills and in-
tegration, excellent quality, construction
solutions, profitability, use of appropriate
methods and technology to achieve the
Best Works Project.
