Construction work begins
at the energy-from-waste facility at
Buckimhamshire (United Kingdom)
On 5 September, a ceremony was held to
mark the beginning of the construction of
the Buckinghamshire energy-from-waste fa-
cility at Greatmoor. A pear tree was planted
during the ceremony which counted with
the presence of Carl Etholen, chairman of
the Buckimhamshire County Council; Lesley
Clarke, the head of the Council’s Environ-
ment Department; and FCC Environment’s
Development Manager, Richard Belfield.
Valued at 275 million pounds, the 30-year
contract was awarded in April 2013 by the
Buckinghamshire Council after a strict and
rigorous tender process. The start of the
construction work is a very important mo-
ment for all of those who work in this project.
Each year, the plant will convert 300,000
tonnes of waste from homes that cannot
recycle into electricity, providing electricity
to 36,000 households and enabling Buc-
kinghamshire Council to save about 150 mi-
llion tons over the term of the contract.
Electricity generation with low carbon emis-
sions by the heat treatment of waste that
would otherwise end up in a landfill site, is
an essential aspect of Buckinghamshire’s
waste management strategy for the future.
The Business Waste Solutions team of FCC Environment
was recently awarded a 3-year, 750,000 pounds contract
for managing the waste produced by a major tobacco
company.
The contract contemplates the collection and treatment of
various types of materials, including general, confidential,
and tobacco waste products as well as paper and card-
board.
The team will help the company to achieve its goal of re-
ducing the volume of waste that ends up at landfill sites
to less than 5% over the next 12 months and to offset its
carbon emissions by planting about 900 trees each year
in the Nottinghamshire area.
The company produces 3,000 tonnes of waste each year
and is under the obligation of managing the materials from
the tobacco manufacturing process in an ethical manner.
FCC Environment
will be managing the waste
of a major tobacco company
