FCC Industrial is a technology company

with more than 25 years’ experience in

the deployment of complex projects invol-

ving electromechanical installations and

systems. These projects are vital in critical

infrastructures in the transport sector (road

and railway tunnels, buildings). During the-

se years, we have installed intelligent trans-

portation systems (ITS) in more than 30 ro-

ads and highways (> 1,150 km) and in more

than 90 (> 110 km).

FCC Industrial executes hierarchically com-

plete projects, covering the entire cycle

(design, manufacturing, supply, installation,

and testing) and all the technical aspects

of installations (electrical, mechanical, sys-

tems, communications, safety, and mana-

gement centres).

Road tunnels are governed by technical

regulations pursuant to European Directive

2004/54/CE y el R.D. 635/06. The following

building blocks are included in the comple-

te ITS installation in tunnels:

Control Centre, traffic management

software (SCADA).

Communications network: Gigabit

networks, fibre optic transport, and

radio-communications (TETRA).

Variable Message Signs (VMS): in ro-

ads and inside tunnels.

Video-surveillance: closed-circuit tele-

vision (CCTV) and automatic incident

detection systems (AID).

Environmental monitoring: pollution

levels (CO, NOx, opacity), visibility, lu-

minance at tunnel mouths, humidity,

speed, wind direction, etc.

Control stations: tunnels (ERU) and

traffic counter (ADR).

SOS emergency posts and loud-

speaker systems.

Electromechanical lighting and venti-

lation installations.

Power supply (MT y BT): distribution,

transformation centres, generators.

Tunnels are critical infrastructures and, ac-

cordingly, its pain tubes, accesses, and

emergency galleries are supervised by

adaptive algorithms which are able to regu-

late ventilation, lighting, and safety systems

in real time. The most critical module is the

fire detection and extinguishing systems

that coordinate all the technical sub-sys-

tems of the tunnel and in charge of main-

taining overall safety, facilitating evacuation

plans for drivers and reducing the impact

on the infrastructures as much as possible.
