to the works of the enlargement of Madrid, a necessary project for the demographic growth that the city was experiencing and that was approved in 1911, year in which the construction of the Plaza de España is announced. Over the years, new reforms were carried out, new buildings were built around it, some of them emblematic and recognised as the Torre de Ma- drid building, which for a long time was the tallest building in the capital; or the España building, a skyscraper with a staggered silhouette, the prota- gonist of many films. With the reform to be executed by FCC, a substantial improvement in mobility will be allowed, reducing po- llution and therefore benefiting the ci- ty’s sustainability. The project will reduce the motori- zed traffic, thus increasing the pe- destrian spaces and establishing a continuous line of pedestrian and green areas connecting the gardens of the Plaza de Oriente with the Sa- batini gardens, the Parque del Oes- te and the Templo de Debod and Madrid Rio. The project will substantially improve mobility, reducing pollution and therefore benefitting the city’s sustainability In addition, a pioneer pedestrian cros- sing will be created in Spain between Gran Vía St., Princesa St. and Reyes St., as it will allow pedestrians to tra- vel simultaneously in all directions and even diagonally. In addition, thousands of jobs will be created that will allow the revitaliza- tion of commercial activities and ho- tels in the area. Today, more than 100 years after its construction was approved in 1909, FCC has the privilege of refurbishing Madrid’s Plaza de España, one of the largest squares in the world. Together with the company PACSA, the FCC Group’s construction area won the contract for the complete remodelling of this important enclave in the city. A 62 million budget The budget for this project is 62 mi- llion euros and the term for its execu- tion is 21 months. The remodelling of the Plaza de Es- paña has been designed by the ar- chitects Fernando Porras Isla-Fer- nández, Aranzazu La Casta Muñoa and Lorenzo Fernández-Ordóñez Hernández, whose project was the winner of the ideas competition orga- nized by the City Council after being selected as a finalist by a jury of ex- perts and later elected by the citizens of the capital “through a broad pro- cess of participation”.
