More than 130 bicycles taken to the recycling sites (HWRCs) in Barnsley, Yorkshire (United Kingdom), have been inspected since September last year. One hundred of these were in good enough conditions to be repai- red and sold to the community, the- reby giving rise to this project. The project is a joint effort of Barns- ley Council, FCC Environment, as the contractor of the HWRCs, and Cy- cle Penistone, a government-funded NGO specialising in the repair, rental and sale of bicycles, including tan- dems, electric bikes and bikes adap- ted for disabled riders. The recycled bicycles can be pur- chased for as little as 25 pounds sterling and are totally refurbished, subjected to a 9-point safety inspec- tion before being sold with a 3-month warranty. The bikes can be purchased at Cycle Penistone CIC or through its website. A bicycle rental program for children has also been created in one of Bar- nsley’s public parks. Thus, Cycle Pe- nistone CIC in collaboration with the Park Service and the owner of the award-winning Elsecar Park cafete- ria, implemented an innovative pro- gramme in July last year to rent bi- cycles and helmets for children aged 3-7 at a cost of £2 an hour. If the pro- ject is successful, it will be extended to other parks and tourist attractions in the district. To keep bicycles safe in the park, FCC Environment donated a container. FCC Environment participates in a bicycle-recycling centre in Barnsley, Yorkshire (United Kingdom) Bicycles that could end up as scrap metal are repaired and ready for use. Since the project was launched, the response from local residents has been very positive and visits to Cycle Penistone continue to increase.
