We are FCC - Nº3

on the communities as a result of the Group’s operations to be able to de- velop measures; promoting the social awareness of our employees through corporate volunteer initiatives. Also worth highlighting is he social contribution of FCC in the United Kingdom which, in 2016, through the WREN Foundation, allocated more than 8-7 million pounds sterling for 208 social projects. Smart services FCC wants to provide smart ser- vices in the communities where it operates. These services nowadays are mainly focused on global efforts in the fight against climate change and for the sustainability of urban services. The Group has a Climate Change Strategy thanks to which, in 2016, the Company’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) were in line with those of the previous year. It was also able to increase the scope of the calculation of its carbon foo- tprint in its three main business lines which was verified by an indepen- dent third party and registered in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and the Environment. Furthermore, the Group also contri- buted to energy recovery. In 2016 it generated 43,168 GJ of energy from biogas resulting from bio-methani- sation and biogas from landfill sites, maintaining the same levels of ener- gy consumption of previous years. In the circular economy model, FCC contributes directly through the ma- nagement, treatment, and recovery of waste and end-to-end water ma- nagement. Just in Spain and thanks to the recovery of material at FCC’s waste treatment facilities, in 2016 it was possible to prevent the emis- sion of 272,639 tonnes of CO2eq. Worth mentioning is the business transformation process in the Uni- ted Kingdom over the last few years towards a model based on recycling and recovery. The rollout last year of new energy generation facilities led to the production of 128,149.51 MW in 2016 by treating over 188 thou- sand tonnes of waste. For its part, FCC Aqualia through the INCOVER project, financed by the European Union with a budget of almost 8.5 million euros, took ad- vantage of the technology for the treatment of waste water to convert WWTPs into factories of products of ecological value. In its commitment to Smart Ser- vices, R+D+i plays a key role for FCC. In 2016, the Company invested 10,298,447 euros in R+D+I projects. Some of these include the Smart sewer maintenance service in Bar- celona, six FCC Aqualia projects for transforming biomass from algae into higher value products such as bio-fertilizers and bio-plastics, and the VISION platform for comprehen- sive management of FCC Medio Am- biente’s processes. Exemplary commitment The third pillar of the Group’s CSR Policy is underpinned by the exem- plary commitment of our organization and of its workforce. FCC works constantly to strengthen its Integrity and Ethics framework, especially through instruments such as its Code of Ethics, approved by the Board of Directors in 2008 and which will be renewed at the end of 2017. On its part, the FCC Response Commit- tee, the body focused on preventing, detecting, and responding to criminal offenses within the Company, mana- ges reported incidences through the Group’s Ethics Channel and the Ha- rassment Channel. In the previous year, 20 reports were received. People management at FCC is of vital importance. The Group works towards improving the preparation of its professionals and providing new career opportunities, basically by su- pporting training. Some of the ones worth mentioning are the Internatio- nal Program for Young Engineers, the Development Program for women with high potential form the Industrial Organization School (EOI, Spanish acronym), and the “Promociona Pro- ject” for gender balance in middle ma- nagement. As to equality, FCC Construcción and FCC Aqualia have entered agree- ments with the Ministry of Health, So- cial Affairs and Equality to increase the number of women in managerial jobs. Also worth highlighting is the Plan for Improving the Preventive Cultu- re 2015-2018 of FCC which aims to achieve the appropriate preventive climate within the organization. In 2016 the Group’s accident rate, the frequency and the incidence index fell 0.5% and 5.3% respectively. FCC Aqualia and FCC Industrial were awarded the Asepeyo and Madrid Community Safety and Health at Work Prize. The Healthy Company project conti- nues to gain traction in the Group. Se- veral initiatives were implemented in the Environmental Services business unit thanks to which nearly half of the Company’s branch offices were awar- ded the AENOR Healthy Company certificate.
