FCC Construcción, together with Carso Infraestructuras y Construc- ción (CICSA), has won the contract to design, build and maintain sec- tion 2 of Tren Maya (Mexico). The contract is worth over 700 million euro and the project has a comple- tion period of 28 months and five years to maintain the section. Section 2, Escárcega-Calkiní, stret- ches over 222 kilometres long in the state of Campeche (Mexico). FCC Construcción and CICSA will carry out the project using the ba- sic engineering provided by the Na- tional Tourism Development Fund (Fonatur). They will also supply the materials, execute the entire cons- truction of the project and maintain the railway infrastructure. The magnitude and importance of the award must be stressed. The main objective of the Mayan Train is to improve the social welfare of the inhabitants of the Mayan Zone, connecting the main cities and tou- rist circuits of the region and inte- construction grating territories of great natural and cultural wealth; therefore, pro- moting the tourist, environmental and social development in the re- gion. It is necessary to emphasize that this infrastructure will help mi- tigate the socioeconomic impacts caused by the COVID-19. The Mayan Train has the support and collaboration of UN-Habitat who will design, together with the communities, the regional develo- pment plans based on an inclusive and sustainable approach.
