FCC Medio Ambiente renews the contract for the domestic waste transfer and treatment service in the province Salamanca environment FCC Medio Ambiente has signed the renewal of the contract for the operation of the transfer service and the treatment of domestic waste in the province of Sala- manca promoted by the Consor- tium for the Management of Solid Urban Waste of Salamanca (GIR- SA). The contract is for five years and represents a portfolio of al- most 30 million euros. The services comprise the ope- ration and maintenance of the Waste Treatment Centre (WTC), located in Gomecello. It consists of a pre-treatment and classifi - cation area for 140,000 tons per year of solid urban waste, with a wet bio-methanization area for 20,000 tons per year, a com- posting area for 50,000 tons per year, a landfill site for the elimi - nation of 1,000,000 m³ of waste and a treatment plant for hand- ling the leachates generated at the facility. Since 2008 FCC Medio Ambiente has been providing operation and mainte- nance services for the Salaman- ca municipality complex since 2008. In 2018, the WTC recove- red 6,297 tonnes of by-products and produced 2,500 MWh of clean energy recovered, most of which was self-consumed (85%) and 13,550 tonnes of compost. The contract also includes the upgrading of the RTC facilities with a €5 million investment. It contemplates the construction of a new maturation area for compost, the improvement of pre-treatment lines with the inclu- sion of bag-openers, new sieves, automatic bunkers, new balers for iron-recovered materials and non-recyclable items, the latter with a new system for shrink-wra- pping, and a glass recovery sys- tem in the compost-refining sec - tor. As for the social aspect, the- re are plans to hire personnel from groups at risk of exclusion through the FCC Equal Special Employment Centre, in order to carry out cleaning tasks in com- mon buildings and laundry and to cover 40% of sick leave and ho- lidays. Other existing actions will also be promoted, such as the equality plan and measures to re- concile family life and work. B U S I N E S S 26 B U S I N E S S
