In the beginning, oil revenues had
little impact and only some buildings
and roads were built. At that time, it
was governed by Sheikh Shakhbut
Bin-Sultan Al Nahyan who harboured
doubts about the success of the oil
book and preferred to wait and save
instead of investing in the city. Ne-
vertheless, his brother Zayed set his
eyes on the crude oil and believed
that this wealth would transform the
country. It was then decided, with
the help of the British government,
that Zayed should take the place of
his brother as the country’s leader,
and take charge of the development
of Abu Dhabi. This happened on 6
August 1996.
When the United Kingdom announ-
ced in 1968 that it was pulling out
of the Gulf area around 1971, Sheik
Zayed became the main driver be-
hind the formation of the United Arab
Emirates.
And then,
there was oil
Al LuLu Island is an artificial island exten-
ding from the Abu Dhabi breakwater to
the Zayed Sea Ports. It is a paradise-like
island with two beaches, dunes, two artifi-
cial lakes, and an area for riding horses and
camels.
Al Reem Island is a residential, commercial
and business zone. Foreigners are able to
buy or to lease property in this Island, one
of the first free zones of Abu Dhabi.
