celebration at
the Singapore
Underground
In January 2012, the ALPINE team,
headed by Dieter Meyer, celebra-
ted a great multicultural party in
the city’s downtown district with
the arrival of the first TBM tunnel
boring machine, the Maria There-
sia, named after the Austrian Arch-
duchess. It is the first of the four
tunnel boring machines that will be
arriving at the centre of Singapore
throughout 2012. Several Budd-
hist and Hindu religious leaders,
and priests, plus people from 17
different countries celebrated the
event. This marked the start of the
drilling operations for Phase II of
the Singapore commuter train line.
