The project is divided into two parts: im-pulsion and gravity. The impulsion section which runs along 24 kilometers of diffcult terrain from the Infernillo springs to the San Javier water deposit.

Water from the Infernillo springs is captured by means of a 16 meter high and 100 me-ter wide concrete gravity dam situated 800 meters downstream from the capture po-int where the frst pumping plant is located and another one 700 meters down, both of which are capable of pumping water at a height of more than 1,100 meters, produ-cing a fow of water of up to 1.8m 3 /second.

From here, conduction is by means of a fve kilometer-long tunnel across the “El Doctor” mountain range. A safety deposit was built at the end of the impulsion section with a capacity of 400,000 m 3 and a water purif-

The gravity section runs along 90 kilome-ters from the purifcation plant to the San José el Alto drinking water reserve which has a storage capacity of 50,000 cubic meters and the possibility of increasing it to 200,000 cubic meters, connecting to the drinking water distribution system, known as the Acuaférico, in the Querétaro me-tropolitan area. The fow from the drinking water treatment plant is 1.5 m 3 per second, supplying water to a population of nearly 700,000 inhabitants.

The project required the construction of 41.5 kilometers of roads, high voltage power lines, and a communications system featuring the most advanced technologies in the market in terms of engineering and construction.

Querétaro’s frst aqueduct, built between 1726 and 1738, has become the capital city’s landmark.
